Cone six slip casting clay line blend.

Found this at R&F paints.

This inspires me! It uses a nonfunctional glaze on the bottom two thirds for decoration and allows the vitrified clay to serve the functional requirements.

Cone 6 Crystalline Glaze Base

Fa’s #5 (Revised)	Cone 6
Zinc Oxide	27.0 %
Talc	5.0
Ferro Frit 3110	50.0
Spodumene	4.0
Silica (325 mesh)	14.0
	100.0 %
Add: Titanium Dioxide	2.0 %

Glaze was on cone 10 porcelain tiles.

Kiln Program

Increase temperature 350°F per hour to 700°F

Increase temperature 750°F per hour to 2000°F

Increase temperature 150°F per hour to 2210°F (this puts cone 6 over, cone 7 at 1 o’clock position)

Hold at 2210ºF for 10 minutes

Cool down 750°F per hour to 2000°F, hold for 1 hour

Cool down 750°F per hour to 1900°F, hold for 3 hours

Kiln off, vent off, total firing 9–9½ hours

Glaze #1 Base

 Glaze #2 Red Iron Oxide 3.5%

 Glaze #3 Cobalt Carbonate 1%

 Glaze #4 Barium Carbonate 8%

Observations

*Glaze application was not thick enough (painted on with three coats)

*Glaze #4 with barium carbonate produced the most crystals, possible because of its lower melting temperature

*Glaze #5 produced two distinct colors because of its placement in the kiln

Diamond Ring and Display

In my Crafting the Virtual Space class i created 'diamond rings' and a ring display on the computer using Rhino3D and had them made real using the laser cutter on campus. They are now being sold at at the store i work at ^_^ www.cocoonathome.com

Ceramics = Baking

If ceramics doesn't work out for me i'm going to be a baker, thats just how it is.

So i love baking and i firmly believe that baking is not like cooking. Cooking you can make a sauce with whats simply laying around; a can of tomato paste, a garlic clove or two, dash or three of oregano, and poof! you have an awesome sauce. Now if you were to do that in baking... you'd end up with any from a rock like loaf, soggy pie, rubbery bread, or crass tart.

Simply baking is a science. And recipes are key and i only trust a handful chefs.

America's Test Kitchen: They have a few published books including Baking Illustrated and a pay for website. All of their recipes are tested hundred of times and includes forwards that explain what resulted when they added more or less flour in a cake or the effect of milk vs cream. All very good tasting recipes.

Alton Brown: Any one who has watched Food Network knows this guy and i trust him. His take on baking is similar to my own, very scientific. He explains the interactions of ingredients, heat, and preparation wile putting it in layman terms. His recipes are perfect but i consider them more of a base to work from.

Martha Stewart: I love Martha Stewart.

breaking shit makes you feel better

Today i broke a plate... and it felt amazing! I don't get mad often and when i do i'm not even sure who to be mad at but i think i found the most satisfying form of expression. I think i might make a whole line of ceramic pieces just to break when i'm angry.

My Home

So i'm finally doing it. I'm in New Paltz and i'm doing ceramics! Although this is my second semester this is my first ceramics class here and i've in all but a month turned the studio into my home.


During class one of my class mates began to tell me how homey i acted in the studio and went on to tell me how the sink area was my kitchen and all the students in the class were in my living room.

I thought it was hilarious but very true. I take it upon my self to know what every thing in the studio is for and what it does. I guess it also helps i have that general feel about me that says "i know what i'm doing, maybe you should ask me for help"


It seems all to often that people ask me for help, especially if they don't know me. For example, i have been working in plaster for all of a week and there are people asking me how to do certain things. I love it, i can't wait to teach!
